studio one groups is the latest soul jazz / studio one records release featuring legendary groups from the foundation label of reggae. bob marley and the wailers, toots and the maytals, the heptones – just three of reggaes greatest groups who all started at clement dodds studio one records, the university of reggae. studio one groups brings together classic artists alongside lesser-known artists and covers studio ones musical output from the 1960s and 70s featuring ska, roots, rocksteady, dub and more.

the second single from the cultures of soul compilation, boogie breakdown: south african disco 1980 to 1984, benjamin ball’s -i just keep dancing- is a synth and drum machine-fueled track that also reveals ball as one of south africa’s earliest rappers. boston-bred djs, soul clap provide an excellent rework of the track adding some big room club flavor to the track for djs around the world. soul clap are the globe trotting dj duo of eli goldstein and charles levine who ve done everything from headlining clubs in ibiza to creating dj mix albums for fabric and dj kicks to making records with george dj/producer and co-founder of the running back label, gerd janson provides two funked up rerubs of the track, one with vocals and one without. licensed directly from the artist and housed in a custom disco sleeve these edits won t be available on the compilation.

a rare look into the discotheque era of waikiki, al nobriga’s “my last disco song” tells of a time when nightclubs lined kalakaua avenue and practically every hotel hosted live entertainment. seven days a week, locals rubbed elbows with visitors in discos like the point after, cock’s roost, garden bar, infinity, duke kahanamoku’s, foxy lady too, valentino’s, hawaiian hut—the list goes on.

soul jazz records’ new boombox 2 is a new selection of early rap music from the period 1979-83, with barely a household name in sight. featured here are some the earliest hip-hop records that came out of new york city following the enormous commercial success of the first ever rap record, ‘rapper’s delight’ by the sugarhill gang, in september 1979. artists and producers alike tried to jump aboard the new commercial possibilities of hip-hop. by the end of the year there were 30 hip-hop singles, all released by independent new york labels. the following year there were over 100 more, and so on.

first pressing of 1000 copies. mike lundy, lemuria, aura. this trifecta of inimitable hawaiian acts descended upon honolulu’s state-of-the-art broad recording studio in late 1979 to create what have now become the most coveted hawaiian funk/soul/jazz albums of the era. but whereas lemuria functioned as a short-lived studio band and mike lundy saw little success from his album’s release, aura - comprised of eight siblings from the mendoza family - remained a key figure in the nightlife scene of hawaii of the 1970s and early 1980s. each tune on their 1979 lp showcases the band’s unmatched musical talent that continues to astonish listeners in the 21st century.

this anthology brings to light the music of robert Æolus myers, featuring recordings from 1982 to 2006 that were previously available only on cassette or cd.
the music within “a retrospective” tells the story of a man whose music elevates its listeners to a place of inspiration and enlightenment. often ethereal, Æolus’ music is driven by synthesizers, melodic flutes, sweeping patterns, and subtle rhythms to seed inspiration from deep within the listener.
one might assume that Æolus carved a new path for electronic music in hawaii, but the islands never quite fully embraced the burgeoning new age scene that Æolus found himself a part of during the 1980s and the early 1990s.
few artists in hawaii have produced a body of work, let alone embarked on a musical journey, such as the one that Æolus has created.

mike lundy was born and raised in nu‘unau, on the island of oahu in hawaii. from an early age, lundy s original compositions caught the coveted attention of herb ono, the legendary owner of honolulu s sounds of hawaii recording studio. in 1980, lundy recorded a solo lp entitled the rhythm of life. unfortunately, he spent so much money on production that nothing was left for promotion. it went nowhere upon release.

basic soul unit returns with another deadly ep on dolly, further investigating the thin dividing line between techno and broken beats. a-side wallow is a menacing big room stormer with a delicate pad breakdown, with voiski providing an alternate more driving techno version of it with a splendid melodic twist midway through the track. radiate and joyride on the b both have bsus signature rhythmic ideas and fresh energy with radiate even going full-on broken rave! joyride is that upbeat funky techno nugget thats going to sit in your dj bag forever.

in 2017, the finnish jazz scene seems to bubble with talent. one of the most prominent players in this mix is by definition, trumpeter jukka eskola. after over a decade of adventures in different spaces of jazz – from the dance floor burn of the five corners quintet to the raw expressive modes of mikko innanen’s small big band, jimi tenor’s cosmic jazz and his own prime cti styled solo recordings – eskola takes things back to bare basics. and as usual, when it’s done right, it’s the best thing out there.

the equally strong -taste and see- on the flipside provides the only lyrical reference to hawai (-mangos and papayas got flavors of their own-) while remaining in line with mehl s smooth west coast vibe - he hired two of chuck mangione s colleagues for the recording, guitarist steve o conner and horn player john rekevics.

such was the warmth of reception granted nunorthern soul s debut ep of ryo kawasaki music, the label s phat phil cooper has decided upon a follow up. and having made over 25 albums in his almost five decade long career, there s plenty of ryo s music to choose from.

madcap and jaybee team up to create the musical masterpiece called “settle down”. the song starts out rather jazzy, with it’s smooth rhodes keys and heavy cymbal riding drum lines. when the song hits the breakdown, the whole tone of the tune changes. the punchy sub bassline is unleashed and becomes one of the driving forces of the track. echoing reggae style vocals are beautifully weaved into the background of the track, transforming the vibe into a reggae/dub style d&b classic. the amen drums also help to create an intoxicating energy that make this one a sure thing for dance floor mayhem. instant classic!
“hear comes” takes over where “settle down” left off. the song begins with big amen drums, backed with a reggae style skanking guitar chop. during the breakdown, a thoughtful roots reggae vocal sample is introduced that helps lift the track into a true dubwise gem. when the drop hits, the baseline kicks in and begins to wobble and throb behind all the deep atmospherics. the track has a beautiful breakdown, which takes the listener to a more melodic place. after a moment of serenity, the song breaks back into the chaotic old school flavor, which madcap does so well. this one’s a beauty!!
